Managing Patient Expectations

Every day, I remind myself why I do this job. Some days seem more of a challenge than other days. The other day I had one of those days where you
reach your limit emotionally. I forgot about all the reasons I have been doing
this job for nearly 30 years.

I spent the day after trying to improve my spirit. An elderly lady came up to my desk obviously upset. She threw her credit card down. Reluctantly, I told her we could only take cash or checks (at this location). I was not helping her with this news. Then she asked how she could get to the Orthopedic Center. I tried explaining directions but could see that she was becoming increasingly
frustrated. I told her I would be happy to show her the way.

As we rode the elevator, she leaned against the wall with her head down and shoulders slumped. She said, "I never knew being old and alone would be so hard." Her words tore at my heart. "I'm sorry," I said. "I know that sometimes when you grow old you can become invisible to others."

She looked at me for the first time and said, "How did you know that? Thank you so much for understanding how I feel." When we got off the elevator, I saw her confusion and decided to take her all the way myself. Hand-in-hand we walked to our destination. She said no one had ever treated her so kindly. I told her I hoped that if my mother was lost and alone, that someone would help show her the way.

As we walked I felt my spirit being renewed. She asked if an "old lady" could give me a kiss on the cheek. As we hugged she thanked me again for being kind and helping her. Little did she know it was she who helped me.

I needed that connection with someone who felt as disillusioned as I did.
Maybe, for different reasons, but nonetheless, we found each other that day and
helped each other to restore our faith in human kindness.
What a difference a day makes.
