Managing Patient Expectations

Use What You've Got

The CarePowered® caregiver really cares. And because he or she cares in this special way, they practice CarePower® principles.

Maintaining Focus. The day to day distractions and stresses of the workplace can cause you to lose your CarePower® focus. You must find ways to reestablish this focus, so that you serve your customers without interruption in your approach. By being able to focus and refocus on your CarePower®, you will assure that your customers will not be negatively affected by your occasional ‘off day’.

Here are some suggestions for regaining your CarePower® focus.

I Dare to Care.  Repeat—I Dare to Care! Saying this to yourself—as if a mantra or an affirmation can help you in almost any setting. For example, when you are driving a car and are frustrated by traffic or other drivers. Just say—out loud or to yourself, over and over again ‘Dare to Care’ You will find that you WILL Dare to Care and get your CarePower® back on track. And you will find that those ‘irritations’ will not ruin your day!

Find something to laugh about. Laughter is a great diversion—and it’s fun! When your frustration levels are high, or you are feeling tired or not cared about, go to your favorite source of laughter. It might be a joke you know, a favorite humorous book, a comical television show. There are many things you can find to make you laugh. You should laugh as often as possible, and you certainly don’t have to wait until you are frustrated or hurting.

Take a ‘space break’: This means go to a different place physically. A different room, outside for a moment, your favorite shop or store. Just change where you are for a moment. Walk to a window and enjoy the wonders of nature for a moment. This is a way to refocus that you can do anytime or anywhere.

Take a tea break: There’s nothing like wrapping your hands around a hot cup of tea. The warmth will make you feel cozy. Sipping the tea gives you a moment to enjoy its warmth and taste. And with all the choices in tea you have, it can be an adventure. Get your favorite tea in tea bags, and keep one in your purse or pocket. Then, when you feel the need for a tea break, you can have it in just a few minutes.

For An ultimate refocus: When you get home at the end of the day, run a hot bath, light a fragrant candle, turn on your favorite comfort music or meditation tape, and lavish in these things for as long as you can. Whether it’s ten minutes or thirty minutes, this is a real treat and will put you back in shape to begin another CarePower® day!
